sotong

shall do some writing here to prevent nua-ness of the brain...was reading some article on msn.com and it was in the news that a jumbo flying squid(though i have no idea as yet why they're called that...)was caught by a deep sea trawler in the northern parts near alaska...this ain't good as it implies that the ocean ecosystem is changing...drastically. Apparently, the mr know alls of the game suspect that the critters are moving up cuz of the warmer waters. However, mr wise ass says the cold water might constrain their movement up north too. What the hell. I'm confused. Moreover, these guys live in the freezing waters deep below, so it's so contradictory.
Some facts about squids here...
They live in the deep waters and little is known about them. Don't ask about the sotong that we eat - i have no idea. Their skins are extremely fragile and thus have low tolerance for the comparatively harsher conditons of the above sea level world. As such, it is difficult for mr squid scientist to confirm the skin colour of certain species which are harder to snag due to the fact they disintegrate(well sort of i think) too soon after capture. On the brighter side, it is known that a good number of the elusive buggers are either transparent or red in colour. Now, why red you might ask. Perhaps the "World's most poisonous animals" programme that you watched on animal planet might help you concur a smart guess like it being a warning for other sea lovers to buzz off. Close enough. The reason is to avoid trouble or assist in their hunting trips, but the reason behind the reason is that red is invisible in the deeper circus world of weird creatures. Red lightwaves from sunlight is unable to penetrate into these regions(remember roygbiv?) . Since red light is not reflected of their skin, voila, they're sneaking around on stealth mode.
These eye-openers have really big eyes too. One of the largest in the animal kingdom. So needless to say, they have superb vision. Their big black eyes can prove detrimental to their camouflage though. On the other hand, evolution decided that it wanted the squids to carry on their line for a long time to come, so it gave them light producing organs which provides counter-illumination to conceal them. Sort of like a magic show eh?
And then there's this squid which has one eye bigger than the other. Again, mr squid scientist says that it's for hunting in the brighter shallower waters or the pitch black deep waters.(that pic below is the very squid i'm talking about)

sheet...i'm getting sian of this thing........but for the sake of my deteriorating english skills...............here goes.....................

Giant Squids DO exist! And those stories about them being aggressive? YES! They're all that too. They prey on sperm whales and in turn are preyed on by their prey too. Attacks on ships have been recorded too, perhaps the coks having mistaken them for whales.

ah ok....not gonna write anymore...if you're interested in the squid which took protein supplements, this site might provide some nice info --------> http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us/squid.htm

Damn!feel like eating fried sotong(thai style), fried calamari and bbq squid with sambal!oohhhh.....
